Hi Heather! I live in Calgary and saw your work for the first time yesterday. I was extremely impressed with your imagination, sensitivity and the use of the materials. It takes great courage to put such profound images "out there". Thank you, Marina Newby

Oh I LOVE Annie Dillard. An American Childhood is one of my favorite books. Hmm... Maybe a book list swap is in order, as it seems we have similar tastes? Have you read The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao?

:) I got the same recommendation 4 years back or so in Edmonton. I really enjoyed People of Paper, though it was a bit dreary at points (not that Eco doesn't delve into the despicable himself).
Annie Dillard is the current major mindsplosion other of my days. Pilgrim at Tinker Creek and Holy the Firm really ride waves.

I'm really happy for this reply! Thanks!

Colin, that sounds fabulous. I will definitely read it when I'm back in the continental US and have access to bookstores and libraries again. Thanks for the suggestion!

Brian-- I already love that book! Umberto Eco has never led me astray-- Foucault's Pendulum introduced me to many of my favorite words. If you liked Eco, I highly recommend Salvador Plascencia's People of Paper. Thanks for the suggestion.

I have one book that I recommend to everyone. It is a travel book called "The Way of the World" by Nicholas Bouvier.

The story is of a poet (Bouvier) and a painter (his best friend) who drive very, very slowly from Switzerland to India in 1950. The English translation is superb. Try this book out for its poetry from a transient life, of playing music with gypsies, trying to sell art and stories with the help of the soviet art community in Belgrade, and then... enjoy what happens once they leave Europe. A final image - while in Iran, they paint Sufi poetry on the side of their car to help them avoid police persecution.
